Quick Start Guide for ExpressionEngine I’m putting on my best Used Car Salesman act and convincing a friend to consider ExpressionEngine for an upcoming project. It’s a significant calling based on the spec, will no doubt require at least one custom module, and a strong command of the platform in general. It’s a tall order for any CMS; but I’m confident EE can live up to the challenge. To help her on her way, I’ve assembled this “Quick Start Guide”: basically a highlight of resources, sites and people that I’ve encountered in my past 2-month crash course in learning EE. I’m only including things in here that I categorically could not live without as I continue to delve into this awesome thing that is EE. Disclaimer: To date I’ve built two sites with EE, so I’m by no means an expert. Introduction About the Plugin Repeet is a plugin for Expression Engine. It was written by Brent C. Wilson. Portions of the code are borrowed from or based on the Expression Engine code base. That code is used with permission from pMachine, Inc. Repeet allows the user to simulate repeating events. When used in a template, Repeet tags display EE weblog entries as though they repeat at an interval set by the author. The repeating effect is only simulated; the EE database is not modified in any way. Repeet is free software. No warranties are offered or implied. Use at your own risk. Technical support is not provided. However, the author does want the plugin to be useful for the EE community. If you run into a problem, post on the EE forums and/or contact the author directly.

ExpressionEngine Image Sizer 2.5.6

This ExpressionEngine plugin will resize any JPG GIF or PNG image to the desired size specified in your EE tag and cache the resized image to the cache folder. If you update the original image a new resized version will be created. If the image is not on the server the tag will not return anything. Allows you to show random content in your template. The “Plus” feature is that you can modify the random content in your template instead of in the plugin file, and can use any separator for the items.

Example Usage

You can use line break to seperate these random items, such as this:

{exp:randomizer_plus} aaaa bbbb dddd {/exp:randomizer_plus}

or some other conditions, you may need a separator rather than line break, then you can custom it by the parameter “separator”, as the example:

{exp:randomizer_plus separator=“|”}1|2|3|4{/exp: randomizer_plus} or {exp:randomizer_plus separator=“{OR}”} aaaa bbbb {OR} dddd {OR} some text or any content. {/exp:randomizer_plus}

Coda Slider Effect

Posted on 3rd June 2008 — Although Panic didn’t really invent the effect, the sliding panels on the Coda is great implementation of this effect.

This article will pick apart the pieces required to create the effect, and how to better it.

Recreating this effect is simple to do if you know what plugins to use. There are plugins out in the wild already, but we want our jQuery to satisfy the following requirements:

Degrades perfectly without JavaScript enabled

Sliding panels effect without hogging browser CPU

Next and previous buttons added using JavaScript because they hold no use without JavaScript

Hitting the page with a specific hash (i.e. page.html#preview) shows the right tab, and highlights the right navigation

Any link on the page that refers back to a panel should trigger the effect and highlight the right navigation - this should happen without any extra work Read more at jqueryfordesigners.com

Live Preview with Coda (and other IDEs)

As happens most of the time when the internet is all abuzz with some new tool, the release of Panic software’s new web development IDE, Coda prompted most of us here at EllisLab to download it and try it out.  Allow me to share with you a nifty gem that makes Coda and other applications like it (Dreamweaver, Freeway Pro, etc.) have a leg up on other workflows when working on ExpressionEngine based sites.

Les, the ever imaginative VeeP came to me with the suggestion yesterday, so credit goes to Mr. Camacho for the idea.  Unlike BBEdit and TextMate (and most other text editors), in Coda the live preview is based not on the contents of the text editor window, but on the remote file you are working on.  For those using templates saved as files, this opens up a pleasant trick.
